Metal contamination is a health and safety issue for fashion jewellery consumers. Therefore, adult and children's fashion jewellery must comply with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Chemical Regulations for the release of nickel, lead, cadmium and phthalates for sale in the European Union.

In the U.S, under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), fashionable children's jewellery is regulated as a children's item and must meet lead content requirements. Third-party testing is mandatory for CPSIA, and products must have a traceability label and be backed by a Child Product Certificate (CPC).

Also, the optional ASTM F2923 standard defines limits for heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. This standard also covers requirements for magnets used in children's jewellery and requirements for other physical tests. Heavy metal requirements for adult jewellery are defined in ASTM F2999. Several US state laws define chemical requirements, including California Proposition 65.
